Thane reread Levi’s message and then went back to his own profile, staring at all his information on the page. His full name was clearly stated at the top. Nathaniel “Thane” Walker. How did Levi not know who he was? Was the guy messing with him? Levi’s message hadn’t sounded like a sarcastic joke. Levi seemed genuinely unsure of Thane’s identity, and Thane had no idea what was going on. Yes, Nathaniel was his full first name, but his nickname and last names were clearly displayed at the top of his profile. How had Levi not put two and two together?
Knowing he was borderline inappropriate, Thane still decided to call Tristan Wilder. Downing an entire bottle of wine in the last couple of hours played a part in his bold move, but resources were resources, and surely the owner of the site would know the answer to his question.
“Hello,” Tristan answered on the fourth ring.
“Hey, are you busy?” he asked, bouncing his leg as he stared at the laptop on the coffee table that still displayed Levi’s messages.
“I’m trying to be. What’s up?” Tristan asked, somewhat harried. And yes, technically he got Tristan’s meaning, but the guy had still asked “what’s up,” so Thane went that direction instead of hanging up the phone like a good friend might have.
“I’m having a problem with your social media site—”
“Are you seriously calling me to answer a question about Secret?” Tristan asked, and Thane got the impression he better ask fast because Tristan would be hanging up soon.
“And the guy on the other end called me Nathaniel…” Thane continued.
“Who’s Nathaniel?”
Thane ignored Tristan’s question and persevered. “Is he seeing my whole name or just part of it?” Thane finally got to the reason for the call.
Tristan didn’t respond to him. Instead, he started talking to someone else. It was muffled, and Thane stuck a finger in his ear to better hear. He heard a rustling then Dylan’s voice almost took out his eardrum when he spoke directly into the phone.
“Now, what are you asking?”
Thane quickly moved the phone back an inch or two, ignored the instant headache, and sat on the edge of his sofa, still staring at the screen. “I’m on my alumni messaging app—I think that’s what it’s called. It’s a community in Secret. Did I say that right?”
“Sort of,” Dylan said, sounding somewhat confused. “Keep going.”
“Okay, so I’m catching up with a student and he keeps calling me Nathaniel—”
“Who’s Nathaniel?” Dylan asked, cutting him off.
Thane never strayed off course. “Is there a chance he can’t see my whole name? Or is he just being annoying?”
“I don’t know. Hang on. I’ll call in for you.” He heard Tristan begin to whine in the background and that made Thane smile as he used the mouse pad to click back to Levi’s profile picture. How had he missed the opportunity to take a few shots of Levi before he’d messed things up so badly? If he ever got the chance again, he’d absolutely get as many photos as he could.
